The sudden surge swept through parts of Nepal and Tibet, damaging homes, roads and bridges and cutting off several communities.
Nepal's Rasuwa district has been among the worst-affected areas. Settlements near the river were hit by powerful floodwaters carrying mud and large rocks.
The collapse occurred at a high altitude and triggered a chain of events that caused water and debris to accumulate before eventually rushing downstream. The resulting flood entered Nepal through river systems connected to the affected area.
Authorities are facing major challenges in reaching several affected locations because roads and bridges have been destroyed. Thousands of security personnel and rescue workers have been deployed, while helicopters are being used to evacuate stranded people and deliver emergency supplies.
The number of missing people has raised particular concern. Reports indicate that hundreds of people from Nepal and Tibet remain unaccounted for, including a significant number of foreign nationals.
Indian nationals are also among those reported missing. India has sent emergency relief supplies to Nepal and offered assistance with rescue and relief efforts.
Scientists are also examining whether changing Himalayan climate conditions could have contributed to the instability of glaciers in the region. However, experts have cautioned against directly attributing this particular glacier collapse to climate change until further scientific investigation is completed.
Rescue teams continue to search affected areas, and officials fear the death toll could rise as previously inaccessible locations are reached.
